Project: Greater Changhua RTK Positioning
Client: Ørsted
Working for: Utec
Year: 2021
Country of operation: Taiwan (and Singapore)
Key Equipment: Trimble TDL 450 (radio), Trimble R9 (GNSS unit)
Project Overview: I managed this project, to install RTK (Real-Time Kinematic)systems to aid in the construction of the Greater Changhua Windfarm. These RTK systems were used by construction vessels, so they did not have to set up their own system in field, and all contractors were using the same RTK positioning system.
There were 2 phases to the project’s scope, firstly installing two RTK systems onto the Jacket (base) of Offshore Substation (OSS) CHW02 with a solar power system, then secondly a longer term installation on both OSS’s for CHW01 and CHW02 (2 systems on each OSS)
Scope:
- To install 2 x RTK positioning system on the Jacket (base) of the OSS CHW02
- Design and manufacture a bespoke ‘solar-skid’ to power the RTK systems, for the Jacket installation
- Install 4 x RTK positioning system in OSS SCADA room of CHW01 and CHOW02 (2 systems on each OSS), installed in Singapore (where the OSS was built) and commissioned in Taiwan once installed in the field
Challenges:
- Working remotely with multiple stakeholders and joint venture partners (during the hight of COVID lock downs)
- Scope outside of core business activities
- Working in new market
- Accessing equipment through end client servers
- Integrating the positioning system and cabling into the OSS SCADA room build, as a ‘retro’ fit (persuading the clients design department to support us)
- Obtaining government radio licences to run the RTK system
